Hurricane Sandy – Red Cross Day 2
I woke up early, very early for me, and got a cab to the chapter at 6:15 am. There were large sign up sheets (one I had created yesterday) hanging on the walls for people to choose the distribution site that they would like to go to. They were asking for people to volunteer as drivers as there was a shortage. I wasn’t sure what I would be driving if I volunteered, but once I found a site that was not anywhere near NYC, I decided to do it. So I picked the BOHEMIA site. I then found out that Bohemia is out on Long Island and I would be driving 16 foot box trucks – i.e. pretty big u-hauls. Once all the people had signed up for one of the 4 sites as either a driver or a navigator, we all loaded up on charter busses to head out to the sites. Mike Hoplight was our site lead and gave us a quick introduction to what we would be doing while we were on the 2 hour drive there. Our site was at the MacArthur Airport in Bohemia, NY.
Once we got there we picked a truck and went through the process of loading it up ourselves. Today we loaded up coolers of food supplies and drove through the neighborhoods along the coast in Long Island. The coolers have food to help people get through T’giving. As we gave to people in one neighborhood, one lady asked for food for her 87 year old sister in a wheel chair with no power or transportation in a different neighborhood. Painful to hear but warms my heart to help.
