Days 12-14: They all ran together. That’s what I remember. I played the Red Cross Bulk Distribution song several more times for different folks. Recorded a video of it with Public Affairs for a newsletter. Rushed to the airport. Wish I could have stayed longer as I had more opportunities to play for different groups of people, but I was plumb worn out. I’ve never been so physically and mentally exhausted yet emotionally fulfilled at the same time. Ever.
I was happy to get home, sad to leave, and frustrated that I can’t do more to help all the people that feel like they have been forgotten. Life goes on and the storm has passed, but for so many people, who still do not have a place to live or any belongings or stability or comfort, they are starting over and adapting to a new way of life. For them, the storm rages on.
I am grateful for new things every day, and I will never hear the words hurricane, volunteer, clean-up kit, Sandy, Red Cross, friends, Bohemia, and U-Haul without thinking of these two weeks.
