Day of Service – Fire Prevention – Red Cross – Disaster Action

On January 19, 2013, I participated in the MLK Day of Service focused on Fire Prevention. This event was organized by the American Red Cross and the Durham Fire Department. All volunteers canvassed the neighborhoods in Durham, North Carolina and handed out pamphlets on fire safety and fire prevention tips in order to help families and hopefully save lives. That same night, I was on call for my local Red Cross chapter’s Disaster Action Team (DAT). I received my first call to action as a DAT team member to a single family home fire, ironically, that same day, and in a Durham neighborhood close to the one where I handed out pamphlets.

This video shows clips of my experience during this Day Of Service.

Martin Luther King, Jr stated: “Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”
